St Martin's Primary School is looking to appoint an Assistant Headteacher with effect from 2nd September 2019 or from the first date possible for the successful candidate. This is a senior post within the school’s leadership team and the person appointed should be an experienced, committed and excellent classroom practitioner with  leadership experience at a senior or middle level. We are looking for an ambitious leader who will support the leadership of the Head teacher, has high expectations of themselves, outstanding teaching and leadership skills and the ability to raise standards of achievement, making a significant difference to the lives of the children.

The successful candidate should possess positive attitudes, excellent organisational skills and personal qualities of initiative, patience, flexibility and integrity with the ability to lead by example but also be a supportive team member. It is essential that s/he is committed to teaching and learning strategies necessary for successful differentiated, mixed ability teaching and independent learning within the development of a flexible and creative curriculum which supports children in their quest to become successful learners, confident individuals, responsible citizens and effective contributors is essential.

The person appointed will be employed by the States of Guernsey and will be based at St Martin's Primary School. They will be required to maximise opportunities for collaborative working, teaching and learning across key stages and shared professional development across schools.

St Martin's Primary School is a 3 form entry school of 548 pupils. We are part of a cohesive community with strong links with parents, the local churches and school committee. High quality education is delivered by a team of dedicated professionals who work collaboratively for the benefit of our pupils.

Appointment to this role will be subject to the following pre-employment checks which will be completed following an offer of employment:

  • Satisfactory references which must include one from the candidate's current line manager
  • Occupational Health Clearance
  • Satisfactory, Enhanced, Disclosure and Barring Service Check with Barred Listing Check.  Convictions likely to be considered relevant to this post include crimes involving, but not limited to, theft violence, dishonesty, fraud, vulnerable individuals and children
  • Confirmation of required qualifications / registrations
  • Possession of a valid Right to Work document

Should the successful applicant not meet the requirements sufficiently he/she may be appointed at a lower grade than stated. The successful applicant would then have the opportunity to progress to the grade advertised once the necessary skills and knowledge have been developed and the postholder has demonstrated the ability to undertake the duties at the higher level.

The Bailiwick of Guernsey is made up of four islands: Guernsey, Herm, Sark and Alderney.

Education in Guernsey comprises of 11 primary schools, four secondary schools, and three special schools which offer education to the Island’s young people who require additional support.
