Job overview

We are looking for a new Chair for the SJWMS Academies Board. The board is responsible for the local governance of Sir Joseph Williamson's Mathematical School in Kent.

This non-executive, unpaid position would suit someone with management experience and the ability to build teams. You will need to have a keen interest in the development of young people, education in general and ideally have a connection to the local area.

Sir Joseph Williamson's Mathematical School was judged "outstanding" in its last inspection which took place in 2008 and has continued to go from strength to strength since joining the very successful Leigh Academies Trust in 2019.

Plenty of support, induction and training will be offered to enable you to succeed in this role. The post is offered on a 4-year term initially and is effective from December 2022, with the opportunity to hand over with the current Chair initially. Candidates wishing to have an initial discussion can contact our Academies Director, Emma Elwin via her PA: molly.allen@latrust.org.uk

To apply, please complete our expression of interest form at the attached link by no later than the 16th November 2022. More information about Sir Joseph Williamson's Mathematical School and Leigh Academies Trust can be found via their websites. Prospective candidates should expect an interview to take place in the week commencing 21st November.

What can we offer?

  • The opportunity to develop strategic experience as a chair
  • The opportunity to work with our team of governors and staff in improving our academy
  • A sense of achievement in making a difference to our academy
  • The pleasure of helping students reach their potential

What is the Governing Body’s Role?

The Governing Body of our academy plays a key role in:

  • Setting targets for raising standards of educational achievement
  • Monitoring progress towards meeting these targets
  • Finding the right balance between supporting and challenging the performance of the principal and therefore the performance of staff and the academy as a whole
  • Deciding policy and future development plans
  • Upholding good governance

About Sir Joseph Williamson's Mathematical School

Working with us: Sir Joseph Williamson’s Mathematical School was founded in 1701 in order to provide an education to young men who would go on to work at the famous Chatham Dockyard. More than 300 years later we still pride ourselves on providing a superb academic education alongside an unparalleled range of opportunities for personal growth and character development. Ofsted judge the school to be ‘Outstanding', a grading the school has held since 2005. The comment that stands out to us is, “students thrive within its distinctive ethos, enabling them to succeed academically and to develop into confident, well-rounded individuals who are prepared extremely well for their future lives.” In our last report the lead inspector noted that ‘Pupils and students are thoughtful, polite, courteous and respectful. The school’s culture helps them to feel safe and happy. Their behaviour is exceptional. Pupils have extremely high ambitions. Parents and carers are enormously positive about the school.’

In 2012 the School became one of the first 100 National Teaching Schools and in 2021 was successful in converting this into becoming one of the first 35 National Teaching School Hubs. Alongside our work as a National Support School, our position in Leigh Academies Trust and as the lead school in the Kent and Medway Maths Hub the school is in unrivalled position to offer superb support and training to any new member of staff, regardless of their role, or their experience.

On 1st January 2019 the Williamson Trust merged into Leigh Academies Trust, providing a stronger and more developed central infrastructure to further improve the school.
