Job overview

An exciting opportunity to lead English (from January 2023) in a strong and stable department as we move from our first ten years into the next 10 years of our school’s growth and expansion.

2022 marks Aston University Sixth Form and Engineering Academy’s 10th year since opening as Birmingham’s University Technical College  http://www.utcolleges.org/about/overview/.

Our school is made up of both Aston University Sixth Form, which has over 450 learners following pathways in either academic STEM A levels, or Vocational technical courses in Engineering, Health Science or Business. This is complemented by the small Aston University Engineering Academy which has just 81 students per year from Years 9-11. Currently, both phases share a building on the edge of our Sponsor Aston University. However, the UTC is set to expand extensively over the next 10 years, including in 2021 the Secretary of State approving further expansion in Post-16 students as well as a new extension for further STEM specialist facilities. This underpins the quality of the UTC and our overdue Ofsted where we will see re-designation to Good with Outstanding features.

You will become a part of a close-knit Curriculum area team consisting of six 100% specialist teachers delivering GCSE English Language and Literature, along with A Level Literature. The team is excellent, with strong stability, tenure, and most importantly a passion to drive and develop English pedagogue.

The UTC delivers applied learning that is focused on the industrial and business world and this combined with high-quality teaching and education means that we consistently get outstanding destinations for our learners with 97% at 18 years old progressing to STEM HE courses and apprenticeships.

We are seeking a professional who is:

About us

Aston University Engineering Academy (AUEA) is one of the first university-sponsored technical colleges (UTC) in the country and with our sixth form, Aston University Sixth Form, it combines the very best education for academic and technical skills focused on industry needs summarised by our strap line “Knowledge for Life & Skills for the Future” and Ofsted 2022 "Students in this school enjoy a strong practical, technical and academic education."

For more about our most recent Ofsted where we were judged as Good with Outstanding Personal Development visit -  Ofsted report.

Since opening in September 2012, AUEA has grown under consistent strong leadership into a vibrant learning community, oversubscribed by students from across Birmingham taught by 100% subject expert teachers.
