Job overview

Exeter School is the leading co-educational day school in the Southwest, educating over 1,000 pupils aged 3-18. The Junior School provides an exceptional foundation for pupils, combining academic ambition with strong pastoral care and a vibrant co-curricular programme. This is a school with a clear sense of purpose, where pupils are encouraged to be curious, kind and courageous learners. We are seeking a dynamic and experienced leader to join our senior leadership team as Deputy Head (Junior School).

This role is central to the Junior School’s vision, shaping the educational experience for Years 3–6 and working closely with a talented team. Reporting to the Head of Junior School, the Deputy Head will be a visible, trusted and inspiring leader. This is an excellent opportunity for an ambitious leader who is looking to take the next step in their leadership journey. The role offers wide-ranging strategic and operational responsibility, making it ideally suited to someone aspiring to future headship within the independent sector. We are seeking someone ready to make a strong contribution to the school’s development and, in time, to progress in their own leadership career.

Pastoral leadership is at the core of this position. As Deputy Designated Safeguarding Lead, the postholder will ensure safeguarding is embedded in daily practice, modelling a compassionate and restorative approach to pupil welfare. They will uphold high standards of behaviour and positive relationships across the school.
The Deputy Head will oversee academic provision in Key Stage 2, including curriculum planning, assessment, data and outcomes. They will work with Pre-Prep and Senior School colleagues to ensure a smooth journey for every pupil. Strong data analysis skills are essential to support high-quality teaching and pupil progress.

This is a hands-on leadership role with a reduced teaching timetable, requiring exemplary classroom practice. We seek a creative teacher able to inspire pupils, lead by example and teach core subjects such as English or mathematics. Full involvement in school life, including residential trips and co-curricular activities, is expected.

The ideal candidate will hold a 2:2 degree or above, a PGCE and QTS, and have proven leadership or middle management experience. They will bring strong curriculum and assessment expertise, strategic leadership skills, and safeguarding experience (DSL training desirable). Excellent communication is essential, with the ability to engage pupils, parents and staff confidently. Knowledge of ISI frameworks, curriculum innovation and digital learning would be advantageous, as would experience in the independent or preparatory sector.

The closing date for applications is noon on 11 November 2025 with in person interviews taking place on 28 November 2025. Applications must include a completed Exeter School application form. For safeguarding purposes, a CV alone is not sufficient.

The role will attract a competitive salary as well as generous benefits including employer pension contribution, free school lunch during term time, free on-site parking, discretionary staff discount on school fees and use of indoor swimming pool and fitness suite.

Exeter School is an equal opportunities employer and welcomes applications from any appropriately qualified person. We are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and applicants must be willing to undergo child protection screening, appropriate to the post, including checks with past employers and the Disclosure and Barring Service. Employment is subject to the receipt of two satisfactory references provided specifically for this post and addressed to the school, and to satisfactory DBS clearance.
