Job overview

Beechwood is an 11-18 Academy, part of The Schelwood Academy Trust, with vibrant, diverse students who together with our staff create a strong community of shared values.

Inspected in 2019 many strengths were acknowledged and consequently the school was disappointed to be rated as requires improvement overall.  The school continues to build upon the ‘Good’ judgement for leadership and management, personal development, behaviour and welfare and 16 to 19 study programmes in its journey to secure a Good/Outstanding OFSTED outcome.  Our purpose-built school is a diverse and dynamic learning community benefitting from outstanding facilities provided through the Building Schools for the Future scheme.  The school benefits from a strong Trust vision, secure governance and experienced executive leadership.

Following the retirement of our Deputy Headteacher, we are seeking a skilled and visionary colleague who will be

capable of building on the successful school improvement work already undertaken driving the highest of standards in Teaching and Learning.  The successful candidate will have a major influence on our future direction and as such will need to share our vision and have the energy, enthusiasm and organisational skills to make things happen.  Our staff are dedicated and ambitious to further raise standards.

The successful candidate will:

  • be an experienced senior leader with a proven track record;
  • be passionate about realising students’ potential, maintaining our vision to create lifelong learners, enabling them to succeed in their personal and professional lives;
  • have a clear and consistent focus on driving progress and improving student outcomes;
  • be able to inspire and empower staff to deliver the highest quality teaching and learning and embed excellence at every level;
  • be experienced in systems, timetabling, strategic planning and the use of data;
  • have high levels of organisation and time management as well as a keen eye for detail and the ability to think clearly, negotiate and persuade;
  • have excellent communication skills, good interpersonal skills and the ability to juggle priorities;
  • be a professional with drive, energy, determination and an aspiration to headship within three to five years.

The post of Deputy Headteacher is a vitally important one. The successful candidate will be flexible, adaptable and supportive of all. We are seeking to appoint a colleague who will show great commitment, dynamism and creativity and who has a proven track record in terms of their ability to think and act strategically and secure outcomes as a consequence. In return for all we are asking, we can offer great support, encouragement and professional development opportunities. You will join a team where you will be valued and enabled to gain experience across all aspects of senior leadership.  As such, this post will offer excellent preparation for headship and we would expect the successful candidate to be in the position of being able to move to headship within three to five years.

We highly recommend a visit to the school where you will feel Beechwood’s positive, supportive atmosphere, strong sense of community, meet our excellent staff and be engaged by our wonderful young people. Visits from prospective applicants are warmly welcomed and encouraged and can be arranged by appointment.

Beechwood School is a co-educational secondary school located in the Britwell area of Slough and was established in 1982 when the former Haymill and Warren Field Secondary schools merged on the Warren Field site. The current school was built under the Private Finance Initiative (PFI) scheme and completed in 2007. Students and staff are proud of the large and extensive facility the school operates in.

In October 2016 Beechwood School and Herschel Grammar School joined together as founding partners of The Schelwood Multi-Academy Trust. Our Trust is an exciting and innovative partnership of two co-educational secondary schools - Herschel Grammar is a selective school and Beechwood a community school both founding partners.

At both schools our aim is for our students to have a great and memorable educational experience via access to a curriculum that supports outstanding learning, development and achievement in both academia and personal development. Our school communities are diverse academically, socially, culturally indeed in every dimension and we celebrate this.

All staff, students, governors, trustees and members share a commitment to the values and ethos of the Trust and this ensures we put our young people at the very heart of every decision that is made. We ensure that our young people develop the skills, qualities and attributes to enable them to pursue and enjoy successful and fulfilling lives, both professionally and personally. Our young people’s happiness and success is what drives us.

We are committed to providing equality of opportunity and to ensure that all members of the Trust school community experience an ethos of fairness, justice and dignity.

We recognise, welcome and respect diversity.

Beechwood's Mission Statement

To provide an exceptional educational experience for all, where potential is nurtured and responsible citizens created.

Everything that we do will be built around three values: Kindness, Respect and Excellence .  Our expectations as a school are high because we know the potential each of our students has.  If they make themselves proud and our parents are proud of their achievements, then we have done our job.

Our mission is to provide an exceptional educational experience for all, where potential is nurtured and responsible citizens created.  Across the school we strive to embody this in every aspect of each student's educational journey.

Every moment is a learning moment :  from Year 7 to Year 13; from the moment students arrive in the morning, until the moment they leave at the end of the day.  Ultimately preparing our students to lead successful and fulfilling lives beyond the Beechwood School community.
