Job overview

Graduate Sports Assistant

To start in the Autumn 2023 term

St Hugh's educates 350 girls and boys between the ages of 3 and 13 and is situated on a beautiful green campus of 40 acres in the South Oxfordshire countryside, only 25 minutes from Central Oxford.

This is an exciting opportunity for a recent university graduate who is interested in developing a career in teaching sport in an environment which encourages “sports for all”. This ethos ensures that all our pupils are given the opportunity to take part in a broad range of sports and to develop to their maximum potential whilst ensuring high standards are met. We have an extensive fixture list both locally and in national competitions.  Our sporting facilities are first class, with acres of playing fields, cricket nets, Astro turf, five netball courts, a full-sized sports hall and an indoor swimming pool.

The vacancy is a two-year programme. The first year will act as preparation for a sports PGCE to be undertaken in year two (subject to the candidate successfully completing probation in Year 1). In the second year St Hugh’s would then support the candidate through a sports PGCE (currently through Buckingham University).  At the end of the two-year programme the candidate would have the opportunity to apply for available roles at St Hugh’s. For any candidates who would be interested in supporting additional boarding duties at St Hugh’s then accommodation may be available.

At St Hugh's we aim to give all our children academic and pastoral excellence in a friendly environment in which each child can discover what they are good at and, therefore, thrive and gain confidence in themselves.

The successful candidate will be welcomed into an enthusiastic, collaborative and hard-working team. The school offers excellent benefits including a competitive salary on our own salary scale with scope for progression, an outstanding working environment in our beautiful estate with easy access to transport links and being part of the vibrant and supportive community of the historic St Hugh's School. We offer free car parking, free meals, a discount on School fees and the use of our sporting and gym facilities.

Full details of our staff benefits and recruitment procedures, including an application form, can be found on our School recruitment page at http://st-hughs.co.uk/Staff-Vacancies

To apply, please send a fully completed application form to recruitment@st-hughs.co.uk. This should include a supporting statement outlining the extent to which you meet our requirements as set out in the job description and person specification together with two referees, one of which should be a current or most recent employer.  References may be taken up before interview. Online social media checks will be completed on shortlisted candidates prior to interview as part of the KCSIE guidance.

Applications will be considered on receipt and should arrive no later than midday on Wednesday 1st February 2023.  Interviews will take place w/c 6th February 2023. We reserve the right to interview at any point during the recruitment process so early applications are encouraged.

The School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and all appointments are subject to a satisfactory enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check (including a check against the Children’s Barred List), and other pre-employment screening including a check on the Secretary of State list of prohibited staff.

St Hugh’s Oxfordshire is a highly regarded co-educational, day and boarding independent preparatory school with 350 boys and girls from the ages of 3 to 13.

Founded in 1906 in Chislehurst, Kent, St Hugh’s School was named after Hugh of Avalon, Bishop of Lincoln from 1156 to 1200. In 1946, the school relocated to Carswell Manor, a Jacobean country house surrounded by 40 acres in Oxfordshire. The school became a charitable trust in 1967 and is administered by a board of governors who are also trustees.
