Outwood Academy Freeston is looking for an energetic, enthusiastic and inspiring classroom practitioner with a real passion for History. We offer an exciting opportunity to join a supportive and motivated team and you must possess the skills and determination to make a significant difference to the lives of our students and share our single goal of ‘students first’. Applications are invited from both newly qualified and experienced professionals.

About the Humanities Department

The Humanities department at Outwood Academy Freeston is a well established department consisting of 7 teachers of History, Geography and Life, ranging from ECT level to UPS. We are a friendly, close-knit team who work cohesively, planning and sharing resources to ensure we put students first and provide the very best lessons for our students. It is an exciting time in our department as we have recently redesigned our KS3 curriculum, which is engaging and innovative, enabling us to get the very best out of our students. Our team offers a wealth of knowledge and experience and are truly supportive to one another.

Within Geography, we have the opportunity for students to complete exciting fieldwork and we study the AQA Geography specification at GCSE. This specification offers students the chance to explore topics such as; climate change, poverty, deprivation and the challenge of sustainable resource use, as well as considering different viewpoints, cultures and attitudes. The curriculum is focused around our 5 Core Concepts: Human Development, Physical Processes, Human & Physical Interactions, Climate Change, and Sustainability. Across key stage 3 students will complete two hours of Geography in year 7, one hour in year 8 and then two hours again in year 9, this gives staff the opportunity to promote geography to students before picking their optional subjects.

Within History we cover a range of exciting topics including; Elizabethan England, Medicine in Britain, Weimar and Nazi Germany and the American West. At our school, History GCSE is an extremely popular choice, with a number of students going on to complete History A Level. This love the students have of the subject, makes teaching GCSE enjoyable and fulfilling. As a team, we are hoping in the coming year to offer a trip abroad to extend students' knowledge further. At KS3 we continually review our curriculum to ensure it is in line with the national curriculum, but to also take on board student voice, incorporating elements the students enjoy studying. We include lots of local history, where we study Pontefract Castle, the impact of the miners strikes in Wakefield, as well studying soldiers form Normanton who fought in WWI. At KS3 students will complete one hour of history in year 7, then two hours in year 8 and 9, so we can further promote our subject.

As well as support from our fantastic team, there is also the opportunity to gain support from other areas in the trust. This includes CPD from the Geography and History unlocked programme, which offer bespoke sessions on how to develop your Geography and History teaching. Furthermore, Subject Directors are also available to provide specific support for new curriculum concepts and topics being covered.

What are we looking for? We require someone who is friendly, hard working, willing to work as a team, has a sense of humour and of course someone who is truly passionate about passing on the love of geography and history to students. As part of this role you will be supported by and work alongside the Head of Department who is a History specialist, as well as all colleagues within the department, who are always willing to offer support to their team. This is an amazing opportunity for a well established teacher, or someone who is taking their first steps into the world of teaching!
