Job overview

Exeter School is the leading co-educational day school in the Southwest, educating over 1,000 pupils aged 3-18. We are looking to appoint an IT Technician (apprentice) to join our school, a school of great character, to start immediately.

Reporting to the Head of IT, this posts sits within a small, friendly team and offers an excellent opportunity to begin or further a career in technology within a vibrant educational setting. As an IT Technician, you will play an important part in ensuring the smooth running of our IT systems, supporting both staff and pupils, and helping to maintain a secure, efficient and innovative digital environment. Working within a mixed Microsoft and Apple infrastructure, you will gain hands-on experience with a wide range of hardware and software, developing valuable skills that will support your professional growth.

In this role, you will provide first-line technical support, helping to resolve common hardware and software issues and assisting with the installation, configuration and maintenance of devices and classroom equipment. You will support user account management, contribute to maintaining accurate IT inventory records, and help oversee basic system checks such as updates, backups and security monitoring. You will work closely with teaching and administrative staff to ensure that our technology supports effective learning and school operations. You will also be encouraged to document solutions, contribute to user guides and assist with technical setups during school events, ensuring you gain well-rounded, practical experience.

Alongside your work at Exeter School, you will complete the Level 3 Information Communication Technician apprenticeship through Exeter College. You will attend study days during term time, participate in regular reviews with tutors and school managers, and undertake additional training in areas such as safeguarding, data protection and health and safety. We are committed to supporting your learning journey and providing opportunities to apply your developing knowledge in a real-world setting.

We are looking for someone who demonstrates a genuine interest in IT and technology, with curiosity and a willingness to learn in an environment where innovation moves quickly. You should be reliable, punctual and able to work both independently and collaboratively. Strong communication skills, a positive attitude and an eagerness to develop your knowledge will be essential. Basic familiarity with Windows and macOS, Microsoft Office 365 and common IT hardware will be beneficial, and any prior experience - whether through school, personal projects or part-time work—will support your success in the role.

This apprenticeship is designed as a direct route into long-term employment. On successful completion of the apprenticeship qualification, and where all performance and conduct standards have been met, you will move into a permanent role within the organisation. We are committed to supporting your development and offering a substantive permanent position at the end of the programme, provided the required criteria are achieved.

If you are passionate about technology, eager to learn and keen to make a meaningful contribution within an educational environment, we would be delighted to hear from you.

This is a full-time post working 37.5 hours per week including 1 day college study day. We offer a salary of £24,000 per annum, generous benefits, including free school lunch during term time, free on-site parking and use of indoor swimming pool and fitness suite.
