The Manor Preparatory School, situated in the heart of Oxfordshire, is a renowned independent, co-educational, preparatory day school of around 380 pupils aged 2-11. The Manor has a wonderfully happy, creative atmosphere where each individual is challenged and cherished to reach their potential. Every child is encouraged to push themselves to new challenges, resulting in outstanding results academically, on the sports field and in creative and performing arts.

We are seeking to appoint a KS1 Teacher on a Fixed (One Term only) Contract to begin in September 2022.  This is due to requiring maternity cover for one term only.

The successful candidate will be an experienced and dedicated Teacher who will show excellent pastoral care and be fully committed to sharing The Manor School ethos.

Primary Responsibilities:

To create a happy, stimulating atmosphere in the classroom so that children feel at ease in their surroundings and prepared to take an active part in what is going on.

To develop appropriate social skills and promote positive behaviour.

To follow a planned curriculum that will encourage children to develop physically, intellectually, socially and emotionally, both indoors and outdoors.

To make sure each child progresses at a rate in line with his or her ability.

To respond positively to children’s efforts, to praise their achievements and encourage individual progress.

To encourage children to be enquiring, to put their own effort into learning and so gain a true sense of achievement.

To ensure the approach to discipline is firm but kind.

To welcome parents into the classroom and try to understand each child’s development in the context of his or her family.

To be accessible to parents during term time so that they can be guided on and reassured about their child’s progress.

To teach the class the main academic subjects, i.e. Mathematics, English, Science, History, Geography, Religious Education, Information and Communication Technology, and through these establish the basic skills of reading, writing and number.

To provide opportunities for the children to enjoy creative activities, i.e. Art, Design and Technology, Drama, Music and PSHEE.

To plan, with the parallel teacher/s, an appropriate curriculum differentiated for all abilities.

To meet colleagues each week to discuss and appraise what is being achieved and to plan ahead.

To follow units of study which have been laid down for the year and to review these regularly with the Subject Co-ordinators and Head of Subject.

To encourage the children to develop physical skills by working with specialist PE staff and taking part in physical activities and sporting events.

To create a lively, stimulating classroom environment through relevant displays of children’s work.

To arrange and go on topical educational visits with the class when these enhance the children’s learning and complete all the necessary paperwork using the school’s trip pack.

To keep a record of lessons planned and taught through each term.

To mark the children’s work thoroughly and systematically (see Marking Policy).

To keep records of individual academic progress in core subjects – bearing in mind the relevant attainment targets for the age group. Social and emotional development should also be recorded appropriately.

To be prepared to take on the role of a KS1 Subject Co-ordinator should the post arise and work with the Head of Subject and Head of Years 1 & 2 to oversee the planning, teaching and learning of this subject in KS1

To organise and direct a Class Assembly (in Year 1) or a year group play (in Year 2) with the parallel teachers annually

To prepare and lead a Year 1 and 2 assembly each term.

To organise and attend Parents’ Evenings (including Curriculum Evening in September and a Saturday Open day, typically in the Autumn Term).

To direct and guide support staff in their work with children.

Staff are expected to offer an extra-curricular activity (e.g. a club) each term, although this offer will not always be taken up, depending on the term’s overall extra-curricular programme.

To act as a Key Stage One Subject Co-ordinator (or possibly Whole School Head of Subject) for a subject if requested to do so. A separate financial allowance is paid for this.

Providing or contributing to oral and written assessments, reports and references relating to individual pupils and groups of pupils. To write individual reports on each child and participate in Parents’ Evenings twice a year.

Participating actively in the school’s staff development and appraisal process which supports the teacher’s further training and professional development as a practitioner.

Taking part in the school’s work scrutiny programme.

Reviewing from time to time the teacher’s methods of teaching and programmes of work.

To be prepared to go out to day and residential courses if they are relevant to the work being covered in school and to attend all INSET days when arranged. Typically, the two/three days before the start of each term – i.e. when the pupils return – are for all staff for training and preparation. There may be other days in the school year when teaching staff are required for training with reasonable notice.

Advising and co-operating with the Head and other teachers (or any one or more of them) on the preparation and development of courses of study, teaching materials, teaching programmes, methods of teaching and assessment and pastoral arrangements.

Maintaining good order and discipline among the pupils and safeguarding their health and safety both when they are authorised to be on the school premises and when they are engaged in authorised school activities elsewhere; following all aspects of the school’s safeguarding policies, including informing the Headmaster or Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) of any concerns.

Attending weekly Year 1 and 2 meetings, whole school staff meetings and other subject meetings when they are held. These could be during a lunch break or after the normal school hours and should normally be finished by 5.45pm.

Providing cover for colleagues when needed and supervising/teaching pupils or classes whose teacher is not available to teach them.

Participating in arrangements for preparing pupils for public examinations (including Key Stage tests, GL Assessment tasks and NFER tests according to the relevant year group assessment timetable) and in assessing pupils for the purposes of such examinations; recording and reporting such assessments; and participating in arrangements for pupils’ presentation for and supervision during such examinations.

Contributing to the selection for appointment and professional development of other teachers and non-teaching staff, including the induction and assessment of new and probationary teachers.

Co-ordinating or managing the work of other teachers often in the role of a subject co-ordinator.

Taking part, as may be required of the teacher, in the review, development and management of activities relating to the curriculum, organisation and pastoral functions of the School.

Participating in administrative and organisational tasks related to such duties as are described above, including the management or supervision of persons providing support for the teachers in the School and the ordering and allocation of equipment and material.

Attending assemblies, registering the attendance of pupils and supervising pupils, whether these duties are to be performed before, during or after school sessions.

Staff are expected to carry out other duties as reasonably requested by the Headmaster or the SLT.
