St Michael's Catholic School, Palm Island is a co-educational Catholic primary school on Palm Island, offering Prep to Year 6. Established in 1938, the school enjoys magnificent ocean views and natural surrounds including a creek, green hills and beachfront. The Sisters of Our Lady Help of Christians opened the school and later the Franciscan Missionaries of Mary Sisters took charge, remaining on the island until 2011. Their mission 'Truth by Love,' remains the school’s motto. St Michael's Catholic School exists to service the community's Indigenous people, with the majority of students being of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander descent.

About the role

St Michael's Catholic School, Palm Island is seeking an experienced and dedicated Learning and Teaching Adviser. This role is a part time, 2 year fixed term position completing 18 hours a week across 3 days commencing as soon as practicable.  There is a possibility for this position to be full time, with added responsibility based on experience and expertise. 

The purpose of the Learning and Teaching Adviser is to support the Principal to develop planning, enact and review the processes central to improved student learning outcomes. The Principal is ultimately responsible for the Catholic ethos, curriculum and effective management of the school.

The focus on learning and teaching is a priority in our schools. This role holder will be aware of current educational research and the Systemic, State and Federal initiatives in curriculum.

Another major focus of the role is to enable a teacher community of practice model which values, harnesses and builds teacher capability.

The Learning and Teaching Adviser will actively engage with the annual Empowering Teacher Performance process and participate in quarterly Curriculum Network meetings at the Townsville Catholic Education Office (TCEO), which may require travel.

The incumbent will work closely with the school’s Leadership team and with the Curriculum Advisers from the Townsville Catholic Education Office.

Key Accountabilities

  • Support the development of a community of practice with staff in respect to curriculum development
  • Demonstrate support for school-based curriculum developments, in accordance with TCEO learning framework and requirements
  • Make contribution to the formation and ongoing evaluation of the annual school improvement plan, in respect to its curriculum goals
  • Assist colleagues to enhance curriculum clarity and to effectively implement the Australian curriculum  
  • Assist colleagues in using data to support student learning  
  • Communicate effectively with the staff in relation to curriculum developments, demands and expectations 
  • Assist with preparation of and ongoing monitoring of  school learning area programs 
  • Assist with staff in-service and professional development, ensuring opportunities that are relevant and supportive of the identified needs of the staff
  • Coordinate designated diagnostic and standardised testing as required 
  • Engage with the arrangements for reporting to parents on student achievement and performance 
  • Support colleagues by fostering collaborative planning of units, assessment tasks, guides to making judgment and resource sharing
  • Represent the school on curriculum committees and associated diocesan groups as required
  • Meet regularly  with the school’s leadership team to plan and evaluate the school’s curriculum projects and initiatives
  • Promote the awareness of the Australian curriculum and curriculum priorities with families and the school community.

Mandatory Criteria

  • Current Working with Children Suitability Card or eligibility to obtain same *
  • Current Level One Google Certification or willing to attain within the first 12 months of holding the role
  • Appropriate Tertiary qualifications
  • Registration or eligibility for registration with Queensland College of Teachers
  • Full accreditation to teach/teach Religious Education in a Catholic school
  • Current Driver’s Licence
  • Ability to travel from time to time within the Catholic Diocese of Townsville
  • Ability to perform the physical requirements of the role in a safe manner.
