Grade: Hours: C1 .22 - .25 £21,074 - £23,111 pro rata (actual £18,406 - £20,185) 37 hours per week, Term Time Only + 10 days (40 weeks per year)

Accountable to: Literacy Coordinator


Role: To contribute to key objectives of the Academy Development Plan, ‘Raising standards of achievement’ by; managing the daily functions of the Library and its contribution to the strategic development of teaching and learning; creating a vibrant learning environment, encouraging a high level of engagement before, during and after school to meet the needs of students from across the learning ability range; being responsible for managing library resources, including budget and stock control.

Main Duties and Responsibilities: 

Supporting staff:

  • Work with curriculum co-ordinators to develop their schemes of work by identifying resources and equipment that will be of use to them.
  • General operation of the library system and its functions.
  • Assist staff in the delivery of lessons by ensuring that equipment is ready for use and that resources are available.
  • Produce reports and data for senior leaders regarding progress of students with their reading.
  • Support teaching staff by listening to students read in-class, working on a one-to-one basis with students during reading lessons.
  • Liaise with fellow library staff within the White Rose Academies Trust to plan interesting events for staff and students.
  • Provide each form group with a book box, with level appropriate literature.

Supporting Students

  • Help to develop a love of reading in all our young people through organising a range of events in the library throughout the year.
  • Maintain and promote our Positive Discipline Policy/library code of behaviour.
  • Create interesting displays on current affairs and topics related to the curriculum.
  • Work with individual students in assisting with book selection, matching with their level of literacy and areas of interest.
  • Teach library information retrieval skills, revision and study skills as well as induction to library for EAL students.
  • Listen to and work with students on a one-to-one basis with their reading – sometimes after school.
  • Promote good reading practice and effectively engage reluctant readers.
  • Ensure fair distribution of book resources across all levels of ability.
  • Facilitate/run after school clubs.
  • Ensure computers and printers are working efficiently, reporting problems to the ICT Team to minimise disruption to students.
  • Attend School Library Service meetings and liaise with them regarding any events.
  • Be responsible for administration for the Accelerated Reader reading scheme including promotion of the scheme to students using display boards and progress charts.
  • Assist with the training of new staff on the Accelerated Reader reading scheme.
  • Organise, purchase and present Accelerated Reader prizes for termly assemblies.
  • Organise, support and chaperone students involved in WRAT Student Council, including entry on Evolve.
  • Support students on Work Experience from our school and other schools.

Leeds West is a co-educational, non-denominational 11-16 secondary in the city’s district of Bramley. The school is a member of the White Rose Academies Trust. There are currently approximately 1,300 students on the school roll. The school is located near Summerfield Primary School and Stanningley Park. The school offers an extensive programme of extra-curricular activities from martial arts to chess. The school is also sponsored by Leeds City College.
