Otahuhu College www.otahuhucollege.school.nz is located in NZ’s largest, most culturally diverse city, Auckland and we are looking for an experienced Learning Support / SENCO teacher to commence work in term 1, late January 2020.
Our school serves a largely Pacific Island - Maori local community. The students in many cases come from first or second-generation families who moved to New Zealand for a better life and for better opportunities for their children. Our school has gone through a period of significant improvement in the past five years and we are committed to increasing the number of students who go on to degree-level study.
We are looking for a dedicated, energised teacher who will be firm but fair and who will have unlimited patience! You will need to be creative and be prepared to think outside the square; so, an ability to utilise current technologies in order to secure and hold students’ interest is vital. This is a role which will involve working in small groups as well as one-on-one with individuals. Applicants must have a background in working with children with learning disabilities such as dyslexia and some previous familiarity with special needs curricula will be an advantage. Literacy and numeracy are a challenge for many of our students and the role of this new appointment is to be a key resource and pathway and to improve academic and social performance among non-achieving school students.
All applicants must be qualified teachers, i.e. have a degree and trained teacher qualification. Remuneration will depend on qualifications and experience and will be set according to the state pay scale as laid out in the NZ secondary teachers’ contract. A NZ Ministry of Education International relocation grant of NZ $5,000 will apply if you are an overseas teacher or NZ $7,000 if you are a returning Kiwi.
Support and guidance through the emigration process will be provided to the successful applicant as we realise the process of coming to NZ to teach and live can be a daunting prospect.
