Job overview

Located on an attractive campus close to Huddersfield town centre, with an easy commute from much of the North West and Yorkshire, yet on the fringes of both the Yorkshire Moors and the Peak District, Greenhead College has been providing the highest quality academic Sixth Form College (16-18) education in the area for almost 40 years.

At Greenhead College, we are very proud of our students’ achievements and we have a strong ethos of ambition and aspiration which runs through all aspects of college life. The philosophy of the college is based on the understanding that each member is to be valued as an individual. A successful and thriving Sixth Form College, and heavily over-subscribed [there are almost double the number of applicants as there are places to accommodate them], the college delivers mainly AS and A levels - in over 30 subject areas - to over 2300 students who come from all over Yorkshire and Lancashire.

In recent years the numbers on roll have increased by more than 300, success rates and value added judgements have remained outstanding and have improved; all are significantly above national sixth form college benchmarks and some of the best in the country. The college has been placed top of a number of key stage 5 national league tables, and was named Sixth Form College of the year by the Sunday Times in November 2014.

The college operates from eight interconnected buildings on a single campus and offers numerous extra-curricular activities including a comprehensive programme of projects and work shadowing experiences. It has excellent progression rates to higher education, including a substantial percentage of entrants to Russell Group Universities, and at its last full Ofsted inspection was rated as outstanding in all inspected areas.

Ofsted commented that:

‘Leadership and management are outstanding. There is a fervent drive for improvement at all levels of the organisation...communication is strong and built on high levels of trust and mutual respect.’

Building on the work of the current Principal, Mr Anton McGrath, we are seeking someone with outstanding drive, commitment and enthusiasm to lead our College in the next phase of its development. The ideal candidate will be a senior leader in a Sixth Form College, a General Further Education College with a good understanding of 16-18 education, or a school with a significant Sixth Form.

The role is broad enough in scope to offer excellent career satisfaction to an existing Principal or Head seeking a fresh challenge, whilst our existing structures and senior team will ensure that a successful and motivated Deputy Principal or Deputy Head would also be capable of achieving great things in the College.

Opportunities are strong - you will continue our tradition of excellence in education, and you will lead on the development of on-going and future partnerships to secure accelerated achievement and progress of students across West Yorkshire and beyond – there is considerable scope within Kirklees, and further afield to look at the College leading MATs or other trust structures, for example. Clearly, the successful candidate will need to have a strong current knowledge of national and local issues in the sixth form sector. The ability and personality to work co-operatively with our stakeholders at all levels is important to us.

Greenhead College is the Sixth Form College of choice for over 2,300 young people…..come and join in our success.

Closing date for receipt of applications: 11pm, 12th March 2016.
Shortlisting will take place as soon as possible thereafter.
Interviews are likely to take place on 21st and 22nd March 2016.

Greenhead College is located on an attractive campus close to Huddersfield town centre, adjacent to the picturesque Greenhead Park. We are a short drive from the M62 and within walking distance of the train and bus station. The College is an easy commute from much of the Northwest and Yorkshire.

The College provides outstanding education to approximately 2750 students studying predominantly A Level courses. The philosophy of the College is based on the principle that each student and staff member is an individual and to be valued. According to the Government performance tables, Greenhead is currently one of the top performing Sixth Form Colleges nationally.

In March 2022, the College was once again graded ‘Outstanding’ by Ofsted, with no areas of weakness identified. This is testament to the resilience, ambition and success of our students, and the hard work of staff.

The College is a great place to work, with a warm, inclusive atmosphere. Our staff are recognised for their hard work and are encouraged to inspire each another, and to develop and grow. We are proud to have a strong and able Senior Leadership Team, experienced Governors, and a team of highly skilled teaching and support staff who work collaboratively to deliver the College’s key purpose and principles, and strategic objectives.
