Job overview

Principal
University Technical College Leeds • £ competitive
Required from September 2018 (or as soon as possible thereafter)

The Leeds City Region has a proud history of engineering and manufacturing. The aim of University Technical College Leeds is to provide high quality academic and technical learning for 14-19 year olds, ensuring that the city, and the surrounding region, has a fresh generation of engineering talent which will enable the sector to adapt to technological change – and thrive.

As our new Principal, you will arrive with success already firmly established. UTC Leeds is sponsored by the University of Leeds, which is among the top 100 in the world for engineering and technology, and our teaching staff are experts in their fields. Our learning environment is unique and inspiring, with state-of-the-art, hi-tech facilities which opened in September 2016. We’re already attracting large numbers of talented students: the fact that we are currently over-subscribed for applications into Years 10 and 12 for September 2018 is testament to the fact that we’ve crafted a distinctive and relevant offer, delivered through a challenging and applied curriculum. It’s a creative programme of study that blends academic and technical routes with integrated employer projects and university enrichment.

The next phase, therefore, is to raise our profile as a specialist institution developing knowledgeable, confident, sought-after STEM students. Leeds is the fastest growing city outside London, so we have an exceptional opportunity to support and fuel the growth of this prosperous city and the broader region. You will create strong links with our sponsors and effective partnerships with local employers, capitalising on every opportunity to improve learning experiences and broaden exposure to cutting-edge technologies. You will build on our first two years of success, and consolidate our reputation for producing ambitious, well-rounded individuals who are tech-savvy, independent learners and creative, commercially-focused problem-solvers.

We’re not content to simply be good enough. Our vision is to inspire, impress and to innovate. A proven track record of leadership and achievement within a secondary school is essential, along with a demonstrable drive to maintain a culture of continuous improvement and high performance. Committed to creating a world-class educational environment, you will also have the awareness to see the bigger picture beyond our immediate scope: you’ll help to shape how UTC Leeds can actively contribute to making Leeds and the wider region a hub for technical excellence. It’s the kind of opportunity that can define your career, and open new doors in the future.
