You'll raise standards of achievement and attendance for all students within a specified year group cohort by monitoring the progress of students in their learning; working with teachers and leaders to adjust provision in line with the insights gained from progress data; leading & managing a team of tutors and coordinating the work of the link Year Manager to enable students to make strong progress. You'll support the work of the academy in identifying and responding to the learning needs of underperforming students within the year group cohort, to help all students get ‘back on track’ and make strong progress.

General Duties & Responsibilities: 

  • Use student performance data as a basis for dialogue and action with appropriate subject leads, class teachers and the link Year Manager to ensure that student progress is at the heart of all work
  • Ensure pastoral tutors make effective use of student performance data and pastoral data (attendance, punctuality, exclusion, behaviour) so they can be confident about the quality of the academic mentoring and pastoral support of students in their charge
  • Monitor the progress students are making in all aspects of their curriculum and feedback insights gained, including suggested next steps, to leaders and teachers as appropriate
  • Contribute to whole academy monitoring, evaluation and planning processes as appropriate
  • Line manage specified staff to ensure colleagues are appropriately supported and challenged in undertaking their role
  • Ensure Academy assessment, recording and reporting requirements are quality assured to reach a highly professional standard within the work of pastoral tutors and teachers in the academy
  • Work closely with relevant colleagues to ensure that key areas of the SMSC and citizenship curriculum are effectively delivered
  • Through discussion with leaders, to shape the curriculum offer to meet the learning needs of all students in the year group cohort
  • Work with the Senior Leadership Group to ensure all relevant whole academy initiatives are successfully implemented
  • Work closely with other progress leads to ensure that there is high quality transition from primary schools to the academy, between year groups at the academy, and from the academy into the world of employment, training and education
  • Ensure that effective induction programmes are delivered to support the swift integration of students joining the academy
  • Achieve a positive ethos within the year group cohort by leading on the celebration of achievement and establishing the year group identity through leading assemblies
  • Work closely with relevant leaders, teachers and year managers to monitor the wellbeing, positive contributions, participation rates, behaviour and pastoral care of students within the year group cohort
  • Support the Positive Discipline policy through monitoring Behaviour Watch and working closely with Year Managers / Learning Support Staff on behaviour modification strategies, taking a lead on this within the Foundation School
  • Support year managers as appropriate to develop and sustain, the positive engagement of parents with the academy and with their child’s learning
  • Organise Parent Evenings, Meet the Tutor sessions and other events as required
  • Act as a role model for other teachers and members of the support staff within the academy, sharing good classroom practice, and modelling effective strategies
  • Manage, produce and direct the development of teaching and learning resources for the tutor programme

Leeds West is a co-educational, non-denominational 11-16 secondary in the city’s district of Bramley. The school is a member of the White Rose Academies Trust. There are currently approximately 1,300 students on the school roll. The school is located near Summerfield Primary School and Stanningley Park. The school offers an extensive programme of extra-curricular activities from martial arts to chess. The school is also sponsored by Leeds City College.
