Job overview

Ratton School became a converter academy on 1st of August 2012 and joined with Ocklynge Junior School on the 1st of December 2017 to form the South Downs Learning Trust. The aim of our trust is to provide an outstanding educational experience for all students in our schools. We want both schools to retain their own identity whilst working together to support the learning of everyone in the Trust community.

Our aim is to develop a sustainable and exciting educational experience that places our students at the centre of all that we do.

We are looking to appoint a technician who is interested in and knowledgeable about science across the board in Chemistry, Biology and Physics to provide technical support before and during lessons as well as undertaking a practical health and safety role within our busy and successful Science department.

The main purpose of the role is to co-ordinate the use of practical resources and facilities and provide assistance and advice in meeting the practical needs of the science curriculum, including liaising with teaching staff, and support staff outside the department under the overall control of the team leader.

You will prepare practical equipment, apparatus and resources, monitoring standards and practices within the labs and provide technical and learning assistance in the classroom. Other responsibilities include ensuring equipment and materials are maintained in good order and in a safe condition and that adequate levels of materials and equipment are available for use by teachers and students, as well as keeping stores well organised and hazardous substances labelled and kept in a safe place and keep preparation rooms, fume cupboards and laboratories in a safe and tidy condition.

You will be able to work alone using your own initiative but also have the ability to be a team player and should be willing to be flexible with regard to your duties. You will also need to be able to work well under pressure, responding pro-actively to unexpected problems and situations, and have the ability to establish positive relationships with students.

A Science qualification (or similar), basic knowledge of Health & Safety procedures, and/or previous experience of working in a school setting would be an advantage.

We offer an incentive package which includes:

  • A comprehensive induction programme for new staff to the academy.
  • On-going investment into your career development through appropriate CPD.
  • Support and mentoring by a strong Senior Leadership Team and other experienced leaders.
  • Access to the Bike 2 Work scheme allowing up to 42% discount on the cost of bikes and equipment.
  • Full use of an employee assistance programme supporting wellbeing.
  • Free breakfast of bagel/cereal/porridge/tea/orange juice.
  • Staffroom with complimentary tea and coffee.
  • Subsidised membership of Benenden Healthcare (affordable alternative to private health insurance).
  • On-site parking.
  • Free Breakfast Club/After School Club place for staff children at Ocklynge Junior School.
  • Enviable setting and extensive grounds.
