The ASSC (Autism Spectrum Specialist Centre)  is an inclusion centre within Lostock College that provides specialist resourced provision for students with a diagnosis of high-functioning autism, including Asperger’s syndrome. The centre provides support from specialist staff, including teachers and trained teaching assistants.   

Responsibilities  

  • To design an engaging and challenging curriculum (based on a mainstream inclusion model) for each student who joins the centre, personalised to their needs and enabling them to achieve at the highest level 
  • To have responsibility for tracking and monitoring the progress and attainment of students 
  • To grow the department year on year, developing your team to ensure consistently high standards of support for students within the centre 
  • To ensure students in the ASSC and in the classes you teach receive marking and feedback of the highest quality that allows them to understand exactly what they need to do to improve 
  • To model for all school staff exemplary practice in terms of understanding the behaviours that students with autism will exhibit, understanding how those behaviours must be responded to differently from similar behaviours in neurotypical students, and establishing a culture of high expectations whilst still being sensitive to the individual needs of each child 
  • To deliver high-quality training on autism teaching to all school staff and develop the systems and policies that underpin the growth of the ASSC, ensuring it is perceived by all school staff as central to our school community and ethos 
  • Manage the ASSC resources effectively and efficiently  
  • To build effective relationships with external agencies including Local Authorities and therapeutic professionals 
  • Manage the admissions and onward pathways for students with Autism to ensure that their individual needs are met and that they achieve the best possible outcomes 
  • To coordinate and deliver effective maintenance of EHCPs in line with statutory requirements.

Applications are welcome from teachers at any stage in their career and would be desirable from teachers holding or working towards the National Award for SENCOs, though this is not a pre-requisite for the positon.

Lostock College is a mixed, secondary modern, Christian secondary school without sixth form situated in Stretford, Manchester. It is a community state school, operating under the Diocese of Manchester in an area with a large amount of selective grammar schools. Affiliated to two teaching alliances, the school works closely with Altrincham Grammar School for Girls and Loreto Grammar School. A smaller than average-sized secondary, it will provide 740 places for students aged 11-16, when fully subscribed.
