Job overview

Working with individuals and groups of students who have arrived from overseas / are new to the English Language; minority ethnic students at risk of underachieving and students whose behaviour is a barrier to learning.

You will hold and communicate the highest expectations of what identified students can achieve.

General Duties and Responsibilities:

·  Inducting New Arrivals into school at all levels, including the Sixth Form, overseeing baseline testing to assess skills in English and shaping an appropriate induction programme to accelerate students’ acquisition of skills in English.

·  Planning and delivering lessons and sequences of lessons to target students.

·  Working with target students to help them develop strategies for the rapid acquisition of skills in English, including Academic English.

·  Providing additional resources to New Arrivals and other students as appropriate, including bi-lingual dictionaries and electronic translation aids.

·  Monitoring the performance and progress of target students in their mainstream lessons.

·  To liaise appropriately with other colleagues when additional needs are identified. These may, for example, relate to the identification of a special educational need or matters relating to social and emotional wellbeing.

·  Collaborating with professional colleagues to develop and maintain close working links with parents1 and relevant support agencies.

·  Working with individual and groups of students who are recently arrived from overseas/ new to English and Minority Ethnic students at risk of underachieving.

·  Working with individuals and groups of students whose skills in English, including Academic English, act as a barrier to their learning.

·  Working with other colleagues in the Additional Needs Team to devise, update and disseminate the records of target students.

·  Working with staff in classrooms to promote and develop classroom strategies to support the learning and inclusion of target students.

·  Working with colleagues to shape and deliver training for both teaching and support staff to enable them to more effectively meet the learning needs of students in acquiring enhanced skills in English, including Academic English.

·  Providing reports, with the Assistant Head, which contribute to annual reporting procedures.

·  Liaising with outside agencies to support target students’ curriculum and pastoral needs.

·  Monitoring student performance and setting appropriate targets in line with whole school target setting.

·  Contributing to display celebrating the linguistic diversity within Leeds West Academy.

·  Being involved in liaison with primary schools, and the associated induction of new students and data collection.

·  Contributing to the extra-curricular activities programme and supporting target students to access and enjoy Leeds West’s extra-curricular programme.

·  Helping to establish the school ethos based on the aims of the school.

·  Supporting the school’s positive discipline policy both in classrooms and corridors.

Leeds West is a co-educational, non-denominational 11-16 secondary in the city’s district of Bramley. The school is a member of the White Rose Academies Trust. There are currently approximately 1,300 students on the school roll. The school is located near Summerfield Primary School and Stanningley Park. The school offers an extensive programme of extra-curricular activities from martial arts to chess. The school is also sponsored by Leeds City College.
