Sir Joseph Williamson’s Mathematical School, a highly successful grammar school in Rochester, has a rare and exciting opportunity to appoint a Teacher of Economics to join their thriving department from September 2019. This is an additional position which has been created due to the consistent popularity of Economics at Key Stages 4 and 5, and our successful candidate will join us on a part-time (0.5fte) permanent contract.
Get to know our department…
- We are a small but highly collaborative and committed team, comprised of a Head of Department and two teachers at present
- The department is accommodated in well-resourced Economics classrooms
- There are currently nine GCSE Economics sets who study the OCR GCSE specification, receiving 4 hours teaching time per fortnight; five sets in Year 10 and four sets in Year 11
- In KS5, there are three sets in Year 12 and two sets in Year 13. They both follow the Edexcel Economics A specification 2015 and receive 10 hours of teaching per fortnight
- We are keen to expand our extra-curricular offer and the prospective candidate will play an active role in the creation, delivery and organisation of these events
Our key successes;
- The retention rate between GCSE and A Level is extremely high with a large proportion of students going on to study an Economics-related degree at university. We have even celebrated a number of Oxbridge places in recent years
- Departmental results are excellent. At KS4 we achieved 83% A*-B grades (2018). At A Level Economics, we consistently achieve above 50% A*/A and 75% A*-B
- The department has previously conducted educational visits to the Bank of England and trips to New York. Whilst it ran, we competed in the Bank of England Target 2.0 competition and our students got through to the regional finals. Annually, we run a National Enterprise event with Year 8. Students are encouraged to get involved in external competitions such as the IFS Student Investor and other essay writing competitions. We have also hosted a IEA conference which our own students and other students from local schools have benefited from.
