Job overview

St Catherine’s is a school very proud of its friendly atmosphere, excellent pastoral care and strong academic reputation. Our School Mission captures the spirit of our happy, confident and inclusive community.

We seek an experienced, well-qualified and enthusiastic History teacher. The successful candidate will build on existing strengths and have the skills to ensure an excellent curriculum and teaching and learning.

History is studied by all pupils to Year 9 (KS3). GCSE pupils study the Edexcel iGCSE syllabus. The subject is a popular one, and the department is proud of its excellent exam results. Currently, the Paper 1 Depth Study covers Germany, 1918–45 and A World Divided: Superpower Relations, 1945–72. In Paper 2, the pupils study The Vietnam Conflict, 1945–72 and Changes in Medicine, 1848–1948. At A Level, pupils follow the OCR syllabus. History continues to enjoy excellent results at the top of the school and is a favoured university choice for leavers. The A Level course includes Imperial Spain and the Early Tudors. In the Summer Term of Year 12, pupils begin their independent research for the coursework unit, and in Year 13, they are taught the thematic paper. This is currently Russia, 1855–1964. Public exam results are very strong, and History is a popular A Level subject.

The department is well resourced and situated in attractive and bright classrooms. The team prides itself on its care for girls and its tradition of fostering pupil engagement.

The School values breadth of teaching experience and seeks applications from teachers who could also teach Politics or another humanities or social science subject (e.g. Geography or Sociology). Applicants who are willing to take on a new humanities specialism in order to fulfil this role would receive support and training.

The School is interested in applicants who are ambitious about pupil progress and committed to creating a dynamic, rich and broad curriculum. Initiatives to strengthen the exciting extension and enrichment programme will be valued, as will a well-judged and knowledgeable focus on the learning needs of individual pupils.

If you feel you have the experience, enthusiasm and commitment we are looking for, then we would be delighted to receive an application from you.

Please download the supporting information and return your application form to: recruitment@stcatherineschool.co.uk

Closing date: 9am on Monday 29 April 2024.

Applications will be reviewed as they are received, so early application is recommended, and the school reserves the right to appoint prior to the closing date.

Interview date: From 1 May 2024.

We are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expect all staff and volunteers to share this commitment.

Appointment will be subject to a number of safer recruitment checks, including an enhanced DBS check as part of Keeping Children Safe in Education, and once in post, receive further training and updates.

St Catherine's is a vibrant and caring Catholic school that welcomes girls of all faiths. Our friendly community helps each pupil develop confidence as she explores her gifts and talents and is inspired to meet challenges creatively. The School proudly combines excellent pastoral care with an innovative and ambitious curriculum that prepares girls for the 21st century.

In the Prep Department, there is an emphasis on curiosity and discovery that establishes firm foundations that later lead to success in the Senior School (where each pupil has a guaranteed place). Girls enjoy a wide range of subjects and benefit from passionate and experienced teachers who know them well, offer support and challenge at all stages, and are in regular contact with parents.

The Senior School girls certainly rise to the challenges posed by public examinations. St Catherine's is proud of its excellent value added at GCSE and A Level, and we enjoy seeing our young women go on to university courses and careers of their choice. At the same time, girls develop the resilience, compassion and confidence that ensure bright and fulfilling futures.

Those who visit St Catherine's often remark on the warm and genuine enthusiasm of our pupils. The school's Catholic Christian ethos and emphasis on values helps girls to engage with the world around them, while open discussion, time for reflection, pupil-led committees and a wide range of co-curricular opportunities create a lively environment where they can feel a sense of belonging. Our emphasis on character, and on the deeper values of compassion, integrity and resilience, is also developed through a comprehensive co-curricular programme.

St Catherine's is committed to developing its facilities, and over recent years, we have been pleased to see girls enjoying new buildings and refurbishments, like the Science Block and Sixth Form Centre, which are designed to enhance their curriculum and social experiences. We also provide exciting trips, competitions and school events throughout the year; whether it is a trip to Iceland, regional athletics finals or a part in the latest school musical, there are plenty of opportunities for girls to develop their skills and their friendships within the school community.

Staff Benefits

St Catherine's is a friendly place to work and offers many attractive benefits, including the Teachers’ Pension Scheme for teaching staff, free lunch, tea and coffee, fee reduction for staff daughters who attend the School, use of the school pool, and a great many professional and development opportunities, to name a few.

We promote a strong sense of community and a friendly work culture at St Catherine’s, and we have active Staff Committees. We offer free tickets to attend excellent school drama and music productions and host a Christmas lunch and other happy staff celebrations.
