Girls are beginning to go back to school in Afghanistan and women are returning to work, Ben Bradshaw, Foreign Office minister, told Labour MP Joan Ruddock. “Life for women in Afghanistan has always been difficult,” said Mr Bradshaw, who pointed out that the country has more than a million war widows.

The United Nations and other non-governmental organisations are running projects that will have a huge impact on the lives of many Afghan women and children. “But more needs to be done,” he said.
