And now for the good news

YOUR article “Success plucked from the jaws of closure” (TES, August 23, 2002) encouraged me to write in.

My school had 9 per cent five A* to C GCSE results in 2000 and this year we were delighted to get 36 per cent. All too often schools facing challenging circumstances are highlighted in the general media for under-performance. Rarely are their successes celebrated. I was therefore delighted to read the article, but also wanted to draw attention to the fantastic achievements of The Peele School.

Other measures are often overlooked and I was delighted to find that 99 per cent of our pupils gained one A* to G GCSE. This figure was a 12 per cent rise on last year and included two school-age parents - a real triumph for our inclusion strategies and innovative mentoring.

The Peele School is a mixed secondary modern serving rural isolated communities in south Lincolnshire. This month it was removed from the “serious weaknesses” category and has continued to improve. It was supported by a local education authority school improvement officer for four months and received the additional funding for schools in challenging circumstances, but no more than that.

The staff, almost all of whom are newly appointed since I took up post in April 1999, have turned around a failing school in two years. Please help us celebrate the success that both pupils and staff have achieved.

John Anthony The Peele School 84, Little London, Long Sutton, Spalding, Lincolnshire
