Renfrewshire schools appear to be something of a nursery for Glasgow’s political leadership. Gordon Macdiarmid, fallen deputy leader of the council’s Labour group, was head of modern studies at Renfrew High and, to adapt the famous excuse for enforced political resignations, “will now be able to spend more time with his pupils”.

Frank McAveety not only has current experience of teaching in the kind of very small secondary Glasgow wants to get rid of but he has taught in a school (St Gregory’s in Easterhouse) which Strathclyde did get rid of. Perhaps Renfrewshire can now start sending Glasgow their pupils as well as their teachers.
