Backing down on behaviour will backfire

Poor behaviour policies aren’t a new problem. Nearly 20 years ago, in the school where I did some of my teaching practice, I was told that the father (a thug himself) of a particularly troublesome boy was called in and asked to sign a contract in regard to his son’s behaviour. I say “asked”, because the father refused and the senior management team simply backed down.

If what I was subsequently told is true, this tale ends with a little poetic justice. I was told that the boy in question subsequently attacked one of the deputy heads.
