Those familiar with the work of Noel Janis-Norton will find few surprises in her latest book. She continues to promote a traditional view of child management, focusing on the teacher as a figure of authority.

The book is packed with advice on how to improve pupil control and includes an extensive section on descriptive praise. However, this does not appear to be rooted in any theory of positive affirmation - rather it seems to be just another technique to get the children where you want them.

Primary teachers will be surprised by such examples of praise as: “I know that writing is definitely not your favourite activity, so I am especially pleased that you stopped complaining,” and the suggestion that classroom rules should not be displayed as they will blend into the background and pupils will eventually ignore them.

I found this an uncomfortable read aimed at those who merely tolerate inclusion.
