Finishing lessons in a constructive and orderly manner was difficult until I struck on the idea of a quick quiz to revise what pupils have learnt.

By the end of every class, the board is covered with writing associated with what’s been taught. I ask pupils a question, with the answer contained within the writing on the board.

The first person or row to give the right answer is let out of the classroom first and that word or words erased.

Depending on the nature of the class, the questions could be simple revision questions or they could develop the theme further, for example:

“What is the opposite of..?” “Which word has a silent letter?” or “Which word has more than one meaning?”

Within a few minutes, the pupils are focused on the board and the classroom is soon clear
