I am not a teacher, never have been. I just picked up The TES today because I saw the headline “Delete text message style, say examiners”, (TES, August 16).
In this article, an English examiner is quoted as saying: “The script raised difficult questions about how it should be marked.”
I was flabbergasted. Mark it wrong for heaven’s sake! Or is that not PC? What hope is there for future written communication if pupils are not even made to write proper words, properly spelt, in exams? No wonder the country is running short of doctors, teachers and scientists. School-leavers cannot cope with the real skills required for these professions.
