News flash from the diary’s favourite education action zone in Halifax, Calderdale. The story so far: Calderdale chief adviser Peter Bartle is invited to join the appointment panel for zone director; Mr Bartle decides he wants the job himself.

Mr Bartle appointed zone director; retires and is replaced by former Bradford senior inspector Carlton Midgley; zone chairman Vice Admiral Sir Anhony “007“Tippet decides it would be unfair to ask Mr Midgley to go full-time, so he is allowed to continue as a threshold assessor in four schools across the North. (He explains he has to “keep his hand in” because the director’s job is a only fixed-term contract). So a consultant is appointed to help with the zone’s onerous workload. The lucky contractor? Er, a Mr Peter Bartle.
