TWO-WAY STREET. Training video and handbook about communicating with disabled children. Triangle and the NSPCC pound;55. Tel: 0116 234 7200; www.nspcc.org.uk

This pack aims to improve communication between disabled children and young people and the professionals and carers they meet. The focus of the video is on communication possibilities, not on disability.

Disabled young people put forward their views and share their experiences. There is a positive dynamic throughout and a refreshingly assertive approach when tips are given about improving communication, such as “it’s OK to make mistakes - it can help”. Discussion points encourage professionals to reflect on their skills.

Such an ambitious project inevitably leaves little space for detail. There is an important section on hidden impairments, but it lacks reference to people with verbal understanding difficulties. The supporting handbook includes a highly informative summary of 19 “communication options” covering most signing and symbol systems in current use.

Advice on how to use the video for training makes this resource a must for those employing professionals who work with young people.

Andrew Burnett is chief speech and language therapist (education) for Plymouth Primary Care Trust
