In defence of unions

Yet another union-bashing editorial by Gerard Kelly (“Union fights live: brutal, bloody and disappointing”, 18 May). Cheap, easy and out of touch. The function of a union is to protect its members, and lesson observations - along with demands for two weeks’ lesson plans submitted in advance - are among the tools of bullying headteachers.

References to works of fiction, imaginary arguments, rhetorical questions... am I reading TES or a tabloid? Can we please have an editor who knows what he’s talking about?

Phil Delnon, Supply teacher in the South East.
