STEEL AND THE MOTOR CAR. Pack of wallcharts, teacher’s guide, workcards and pupil’s book British Steel Pounds 8.50. From British Steel Education Service, PO Box 10, Wetherby, LS23 7EL, Age range 5 - 11.

This pack is the sequel to British Steel’s Steel and Motorways. It explores the role of steel and other materials in the development of the motor car and aims to provide a set of activities for mathematics, science and design and technology.

The teacher’s guide is comprehensive and suggests different ways of using the materials in curriculum planning. A chart maps the programmes of study for mathematics, science and design and technology covered by the materials.

One side of the workcards shows a stimulus or instructional picture relating to the activities developed on the other side of the cards, which is aimed at the teacher and provides activities, extensions and briefing notes.

Each card has icons which help the teacher to identify curriculum areas. Some key stage 2 children will be able to use the workcards independently.

The materials are clearly laid out and will support teachers in the primary classroom. They will encourage the development of cross-curricular themes related to economic and industrial understanding, problem solving and team working.
