Emotions run high over Auschwitz

Your article on a pupil visit to Auschwitz prompted a powerful emotional reaction (“It doesn’t hit you until you see it”, Feature, 25 January). The Holocaust Educational Trust is a wonderful organisation that ensures future generations will never forget the horrors of the genocide. I disliked the references to the camp resembling a film set and a theme park, but was reassured when pupils referred to the massive scale of the camp, the emotional drain of the visit and the silence as they made their tour. It was thoughtful to include the deputy prime minister’s comment in the visitors’ book but the words of historian Ian Kershaw are more haunting: “The road to Auschwitz was built by hate, but paved with indifference.”
