Aberdeen Grammar has won a competition designed to raise awareness about the oil and gas sector and attract youngsters to fill shortages in the industry.

The school won the final of the Northsound 1 Energy Schools Challenge 2008 last month, beating Alford Academy, and received Pounds 600, which will be put towards a new piano for its hall. Team members James Johnson (S3), Monica Burns (S4), Joe Sutherland (S5) and Michael Cobban (S6) received Pounds 50 each.

The competition, which started in September and was broadcast on Aberdeen-based radio station Northsound 1 every Sunday, quizzed contestants on general knowledge and there was a weekly round on the energy industry, with multiple-choice questions on oil fields, drilling, engineering, chemistry and physics.
