Edinburgh Zoo’s world-class chimpanzee enclosure has received an education award. Its Budongo Trail won Best Education Project: public and general visitor, as well as Best New Zoo Enclosure, at the annual British and Irish Association of Zoos and Aquaria awards.
The specialised enclosure can house up to 40 chimpanzees, and features three “living pods” of varying temperatures and layouts, and a large outdoor climbing frame. It is also a noted centre of chimpanzee research.
The zoo tells visitors about the Budongo conservation field station in Uganda, used for the study of endangered chimpanzees in their natural habitat, and the relationship between biodiversity and local people.
