It seems like an A-level student’s dream come true: university historians writing exemplar essays on 26 frequently asked exam questions - and all fronted by a guide on “How to write a good A-level essay” written by the NEAB’s chairman of history.

All the contributors, of course, write with a secure grasp of their subject. But some of the efforts lack clarity, and take too long to start answering the question.
