FE access is naturally dog eat dog

The results of the Association of Colleges’ survey should not be surprising (“Schools resort to guerrilla warfare on FE access”, 30 March). Competition means fighting for success, which in industry means customers and profit and in academia means students and funds.

The number of students is finite, just as is the number of customers who want to buy, say, fish and chips. If I have a fish and chip shop, what am I expected to do if a rival opens another? Courteously advertise his opening hours in my shop window and distribute his flyers around the high street?

I shall be doing everything legal that I can to retain and expand our own excellent sixth form. And, except where there is a clearly identified benefit for a student to go elsewhere, I certainly shan’t be promoting competing institutions.
