Teachers, governors and parents at a secondary school that pulled itself out of special measures, only to be threatened with closure, say they will battle to keep it open this year.
It follows the decision by Cardiff Council last week to stick to its plans and shut Llanedeyrn High School, despite fervent opposition.
There are also fears that the school’s closure will spark community tension as St Teilo’s Church in Wales High School will move to the Llanedeyrn site to make way for a new Welsh medium school.
Julian Doroszczuk, the school’s head, said there were significant issues involved in closure. “No one has thought about including transport for pupils to get to a new school,” he told TES Cymru.
When Estyn, the Welsh inspectorate, placed the school in special measures in May 2006, there had been 356 temporary exclusions in one year. But under a new management team, the school was turned around, and Estyn announced it could come out of special measures last February.
Jane Hutt, the education minister, has the final say on Llandeyrn’s fate if there is further opposition.
