Let’s Look at Dance. Using Professional Dance on Video. By Linda Rolfe and Mary Harlow. David Fulton Pounds 12.99

Dance teaching usually involves learning specific styles and creating new dances. So the innovative approach of Let’s Look at Dance is particularly welcome. The authors provide a detailed commentary on videotaped dance works that will encourage students to analyse professional performance.

The authors discuss works by the Rambert Dance Company, traditional south Asian styles and the Royal Ballet’s Tales of Beatrix Potter. This useful book helps students develop a language for talking about dance, and encourages their own dancing.

The text gives background information on a dozen dances, analyses their content, and suggests ideas for composition.

Jane Tarr is a senior lecturer in education at the University of the West of England, Bristol
