Events marking the 150th anniversary of the Educational Institute of Scotland concluded this week with the presentation in Edinburgh of Pounds 1,000 awards to the winners of its national schools competition - Brackens primary, Dundee, and Kemnay Academy, Aberdeenshire.

The primary schools were asked to produce a wall display relating to the last 150 years of Scottish education. Local panels of primary teachers chose the finalists.

The runners-up were Aviemore primary in Highland and St Peter’s primary, Dalbeattie in Dumfries and Galloway. They each receive Pounds 500.

Secondary entrants prepared a hard-copy proposal for an Internet site on a Scottish theme related to the past century and a half. The Scottish Council for Educational Technology sponsored the competition by providing advice and facilities to transfer Kemnay’s winning entry to the Web. It was commended not only for its content but for the clear instructions to users.

Runners-up Charleston Academy, Inverness, and Hutcheson’s Grammar, Glasgow, get Pounds 500.
