Children who win assisted places for this coming September would have their places honoured by an incoming Labour government, the Labour party has confirmed. But no new places would be offered from September 1998.
This means Labour would have no money to pay for cuts in primary class sizes until 1998-99, when it expects to save Pounds 40m on the Assisted Places Scheme: Pounds 20m from places not offered under the existing programme and Pounds 20m from the Government’s planned expansion.
