Jennifer Chew ( TES July 12) asks which are we supposed to trust - the tests showing rising standards or those showing no change?

The sensible answer is to trust neither. Neither can provide more than a very limited view of something as complex and multi-faceted as standards.Trust should be replaced by professional scepticism.
