It confirmed some of the worst suspicions in Glasgow education circles. Ian McDonald, the depute director of education, appeared on television to complain that judging schools on the basis of exam results was like comparing Rangers and Partick Thistle on the basis of their results.

Why did he not mention Celtic, some councillors remonstrated, suspicious in any case that McDonald was in the Rangers closet. Not so. He is, in fact, a member of the Eternal Optimists’ Society, aka a Partick Thistle fan. The struggling club’s fighting fund is Pounds 100 richer as a result. Could he do the same for some of the city’s struggling schools?
