Managing the Internet is a readable booklet that succinctly sets out the issues for schools. The author stresses the benefits of thinking carefully about how and why schools should bring a 21st-century resource (with its frequent upgrades) into what are often 19th-century buildings. She is aware of the need to filter pornography and propaganda, and to prevent monopoly of time and space by knowledgeable or over-zealou users. Elspeth Scott's ideas about training children and adults to evaluate the results they obtain are useful, as is her practical advice on viruses and copyright.

Managing the Internet by Elspeth Scott costs pound;5.50 from Reading and Language Information Centre, University of Reading, Bulmershe Court, Earley, Reading RG6 1HY. Tel: 0118 931 8820. Fax: 0118 931 6801. Email: reading-centre@reading.ac.uk
