An inner-city school has launched a campaign to find a mentor for every one of its students taking GCSE exams next summer.
Jan Grant, principal of Mundella Community College, Leicester, ran a small pilot scheme this year which yielded a 12 per cent improvement in results. She now has 70 mentors, and is looking for a further 50. After training, each spends a short time every month discussing exam work with a pupil.
