Early in February, we were shouting about the approaching Vocab Express national language championships (28 February to 6 March) - and now the results are in. More than 14,000 students from 200 UK and Irish secondaries answered upwards of 18.9 million questions over seven days, pitting their vocabulary know-how against each other.
The results
Wirral Grammar School for Girls fought off fierce competition to win not only the overall Genius Cup (awarded to the school with the highest scores across its top 25 students) but also the French and German Genius Cups for individual subjects.
The other top awards went to The Dixie Grammar School, Market Bosworth; Blessed Edward Oldcorne Catholic College, Worcester; and Halifax High.
Blessed Edward also went on to win the Genius Cup for German and for Arabic (a new addition to Vocab Express’ languages). Meanwhile, The Manchester Grammar School illustrated its language diversity by winning three subject Genius Cups for Italian, Mandarin and Latin.
What else?
With the rise of international trade between the UK and Arab countries, the demand for employees who can communicate in Arabic is growing. In response, Vocab Express has new Arabic and Urdu GCSE vocabulary resources, which will continue to run after the languages’ introduction at the championships.
