Adult learning body Niace is to merge with the Centre for Economic and Social Inclusion (CESI) to form the Learning and Work Institute.

The new organisation’s name will be effective from 1 January 2016, after Niace members at today’s annual general meeting in London voted to support the changes, which will also involve a more streamlined governance structure being introduced.

Niace chief executive David Hughes (pictured) said: “We have had a lively and productive debate about our future over the summer and culminating at the AGM today. With over 90 years’ history, Niace is lucky to have members who care passionately that we maintain our long focus on adult education. They have also supported the great work we do with young people and families which is also critical to achieve our vision.

“Merging with CESI brings a range of expertise and experience in the learning and development needed to support people to gain work and progress in their careers. The merger will enhance our ability to support more inclusive local communities and labour markets.”

Decisions about the staffing of the new organisation will be made in due course, Mr Hughes told TES.
