A campaign to defend “progressive” education against any “back to basics” drive by the Conservatives has been launched in England. The Whole Education Campaign will emphasise the need to broaden teaching beyond academic knowledge and the 3Rs, including “social and emotional competencies”. Nick Gibb, the Conservative Schools Minister, says there is a battle to be won against the “educational establishment” and described the idea of introducing social and emotional learning into the classroom as “ghastly”.
