DAVID Puttnam is putting himself up for re-election as chairman of England’s General Teaching Council. Lord Puttnam, who has never taught in a school, told the council’s latest meeting that he wanted to stay on until September 2002. He would then stand down in favour of a “teacher chair”. The National Union of Teachers has indicated it will back a candidate against him. Nominations close on July 6 but no challenger has yet emerged. GTC vice-chairman John Tomlinson will stand down in September.
