Enraged union leaders will be queuing up to condemn the decision to re-appoint Chris Woodhead, but will David Blunkett care? Not a bit of it. On the contrary he will welcome their hysterical outpourings. Look at me, he’ll be saying to an adoring public, see how hard I am. I’ve named and shamed schools and now I can kick the enfeebled teaching profession.

This decision has nothing to do with the welfare of the education system. It is blatantly populist.
