Gerard Kelly’s engaging editorial (“It is up to Ofsted to pour oil on troubled waters”, 4 May) raised an issue that has yet to be adequately addressed. Just prior to leaving primary headship in the mid-1990s, I attended an inaugural meeting of Ofstin, a body to “inspect the inspectors”. Seemingly long gone (I’d love to be wrong), it illustrated the lack of scrutiny of this key role in our system. Continuing lack of accountability plus research evidence about inspection reports’ reliability and validity shows that little progress has been made since Ofsted’s inception.
